Race 4 Recall

What is recall?

Put simply, being able to recall a number fact means knowing the answer to a question and being able to recall it instantly (or at least within 3 seconds) without counting or calculating in any way. e.g. knowing that 3 x 5 = 15 without counting 5, 10, 15.

 How Race for Recall works

There are 5 stages within the Race for Recall programme.  Please click on the stage to view videos to support your child at home.

Within each stage, there are 6 sets of facts to learn (known as levels). Here is an example of the 6 levels of facts for Stage 2:

All children in years 1-6 will be given a Stage within which to start the Race for Recall programme. Each child needs to start learning Level 1 facts within their stage (e.g. Number bonds to 100 for Stage 2). Further details will be provided to parents in the form of an information sheet to help you understand the facts that your child is working on and will include ideas and links to resources as to how you can help your child to learn those facts. The learning of such facts will represent their maths homework, alongside Doodlemaths.

Each week, every child will have a short (1 minute) test so that teachers can monitor their progress in recalling the number facts for the level that the children are working on. Within each level there are 3 progressive attainment tests (bronze, silver and gold). The underlying facts that are the same but the way in which recall is tested is progressively harder as the tests move from bronze silver to gold. To progress from bronze to silver or from silver to gold, a score of 100% percent is required on a given attainment test. The allotted time is normally 1 minute. Examples of the types of questions that will be asked in a bronze, silver or gold test will be provided on the parent information sheet. Weekly progress will also be reported to parents via a table in the homework folder. Once a child has successfully achieved 100% on the bronze, silver and then gold tests, they move from Level 1 facts to Level 2 facts etc.

What you can do to help

Help your child to learn their number facts. All children will be expected to learn and practise specific facts as part of their weekly maths homework. The parent information sheet showing the progression of facts in the Stage relevant to your child will be provided in due course. This will also give you ideas and links to resources as to how you can help your child. Please ask your child’s class teacher if you have any further questions.
