Windhill21

Reading

Our school is strongly committed to improving literacy and knows the importance of reading for pleasure.  There is good evidence to suggest that young people who read for pleasure daily perform better in reading tests, than those who never do.  We want to encourage children to enjoy reading and to read a wide range of good quality literature.

This is how many books and words our students have read so far this academic year:

The school has made a significant investment to our library with the introduction of a new online version of our library catalogue for KS2 which compliments the Accelerated Reader system already in place. Having the library accessible in this way and having parents engaged with reading, will help to support our commitment to improving literacy standards at Windhill21.

Reading Drivers

Our aim is to instil a love of reading in every child; ensuring all children are accurate and fluent readers, with the knowledge and skills to read a variety of text types across a wide range of subjects.

From year 2 onwards, we deliver this through a bespoke whole class approach based on our own key ‘Reading Drivers’.

Junior Librarian

Junior Librarian allows you to view which books we have in our whole library. You can write reviews, see what is new , see what is popular, view your child's current loans and recommendations are given (who next?). This is also available as an app called (iMLS). Click on the logo to be taken to their site.

Phonics

Our early learners are taught phonics sessions systematically, with a key focus on developing pupils decoding skills. From Reception onwards into Key Stage 1, pupils should be able to blend words quickly and accurately using the phonic knowledge and skills that they have already learnt. Children, in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 learn through a daily phonics session, following the Read, Write Inc programme. We have named these lessons 'leapfrog' as Fred the frog helps us to learn the sounds such as c-a-t for cat.

Early Reading

In our EYFS provision, pupils have access to a range of familiar stories through whole class reading opportunities and selecting books from their Love of Reading book corners to share at home. In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils also access their Love of Reading book corners to choose books to share at home as well as decodable book bag books matched to their reading ability from Read, Write Inc. Children are also sent home with Floppy Copies which are black and white copies of the story book they are reading in their Read Write Inc group.
