Music
At Windhill21 all children in Year 4 learn stringed instruments with Emma White from Herts Music Service. They are taught in half class groups and learn the violin, cello and double bass as a string orchestra.
The lessons start with warm up exercises, games and songs and then move on to playing the instruments where they work on technique and play a variety of pieces. We always finish the project with a concert for parents.
Here is a film to give you a flavor of what happens:
If the children have enjoyed these sessions there is a chance for them to carry on in smaller groups (for which there is a small termly fee). In these groups they learn to read music, to play more complicated pieces and even compose their own music.
Some quotes from our year 5 small string group members:
It’s great fun
It helps you read music
You can write your own music
You learn different techniques
It’s a good hobby
It's an amazing experience

We also have an external company that comes into school to offer music lessons. For information about these additional lessons offered by DeRosa please click this link.
